helllllllllooooo out there

it has been far too long since we’ve talked, o blogosphere. i’m finishing up summer camp right now, which is great for kids but very taxing to work for 12 hours per day for 7 weeks. this week is the last week and we are going overnight camping for 4 days. i’m really excited, but the total count is 64 people and that is just crazy!

jim and heather are coming back to philly from viola’s wedding in montreal this weekend. we weren’t able to go for a number of annoying reasons, one being my stolen passport. i’ll have a couple of days to spend with them and then i’m off to parvin state park.

nat’s amusing himself with playing with pork chop, tofu and snert face. it’s pretty regular. i’m going to go out to eat with a friend and catch up later.

it’s 5:26 am, we are voting across the street from our new house. i haven’t seen a line outside yet and the polling place opens at 7:00am. nat told me that he wasn’t getting up until 6am. i think i’ll bribe him with coffee to stand outside with me then.

sitting in my new living room

tofu is playing with a catnip mouse right now and snert face is poking around our new house, inspecting every corner. i feel like writing our adventures in securing our first house yesterday won’t quite do it justice- but i’ll try…

so, i’m not sure if you people on the west coast are baseball fans or not- but in case you haven’t heard, i live in philadelphia and the home baseball team is the phillies and they won this big tournament at the end of the season called the world series. let’s just say that the whole city has indeed been swept up by philly phever. yesterday, there was a huge parade —-

OOPs I hAve to run- I’ll be back sooN!

a new address

kimmie, my mom came to visit (and my dad will be here next week, too!) and a ton of stuff has happened since she’s been here. actually, a lot in a short amount of time because she came just on saturday.

on friday, nat and i put an offer on a house and it was accepted! we are so excited- it’s our first house! we can’t wait to pull out the carpets and paint some walls. more news later and pictures, too. but for now, i’m exhausted and a wee bit cranky.

it was a long day, and my mom and nat wanted indian food. as i don’t really like curry, cumin and lentils it just ended in me being a bit of a whiny pill. i think that i am just tired from having snert face jump on my head all night long.

not only that, but during two of her escape attempts yesterday, my face ended up dripping with blood.

oh, here are the best pictures of the house… now try not to laugh! i’ll send you the listing, but i don’t want people on the internet to know where we are moving…

don’t worry- we’ll preserve the wood paneling! the wallpaper is fuzzy. and we’ll take lots of before and after pictures.

Megaphones, bullhorns and blowhorns

Right now, it is the middle of a huge thunderstorm. I remember big drops like this when we went to visit my grandparents in Colorado- a real storm. After living in Oregon for almost my whole life, you would think that I would be used to rain. I am used to Oregon rain- gray days and weeks at a time of icky drizzle and wet shoes.

Philadelphia rain is something that I really enjoy. I’ve always loved stormy weather. In Eugene, we only got one good storm per year or every couple of years. Here, the street sign outside of my living room window regularly bends and shakes in the wind, making a metallic thunder sound. The storms here pour down floods of rain with lightening streaking and lighting up the sky. The thunder scares my cats and small children with load roars lasting 30 seconds or so. And then it stops. There aren’t gray drizzling days here. It is either pouring down or it isn’t. Wet sneakers have a chance to dry out.

Speaking of sneakers? Yesterday, I went on a mission to buy a megaphone. A little one used in youth sports or events would have been perfect. One of my summer program teachers has a problem with her vocal chords and can’t speak loudly enough to be heard over screaming 6-7 year olds. I looked online before I ventured out and found some sporting goods stores and other stores which had sporting goods departments. I called all of the stores and asked if they had megaphones before I left. Most of the people answering the phone didn’t seem like they knew where they worked, let alone what the stores carried, so I decided to venture out.

A young man that works with us volunteered to go with me and we set off. I was explaining to him that I needed to buy a megaphone. He looked perplexed and asked me what a megaphone was. I replied, “a bullhorn.” He said, “Oh, you mean a blowhorn?” And I agreed- new to this terminology. We went into the sporting goods store and I asked for the megaphones. The young men working looked confused. Juan said, “We need a blowhorn.” The workers responded with understanding and replied that they don’t carry them, nor do they know who does. They get asked that question all the time. I was just standing there wondering what a blowhorn was.

The venture further northeast in Philadelphia was not for nothing. They were having a sidewalk shoe sale. I walked up to the tables under a long white tent and immediately found shoes that I wanted to get for Nat. They were only $30 each! I got Nat two pairs and myself one pair. Bright colors and high tops- two very good things together. (One of Nat’s pairs was a lowtop.)
