cats don’t eat porkchops!

althought, nat claims that they do. on monday (see, i’ve been slacking on the bloggins), mimi and i finished my office and had a new couch, large ottoman, and 2 chairs delivered to our living room for anniversary (4 years on december 18th!) and christmas presents from nat and me to each other.

we stayed up rather late and by the time everything was properly constructed, we were famished. Nat made us some crispy artichoke hearts with basil and tomatoes for an appetizer, swiss chard, and porkchops for dinner. yummy!

tofu started begging for porkchops and nat was encouraging the little mongrel as she chowed down.

after dinner, mimi showed off her owwweeeeeeeeee elbow from her tumble down the stairs.

okay, back to Eugene (even if it’s a week old!)

I flew to Eugene last weekend for a wedding. It was hard to see my people and then to leave the next day.

We did get to have a Sunday Dinner together. For dessert my mom made abelskivvers.

But then we discovered that I make better abelskivvers.

I got to visit familiar places.

And familiar faces.

Kusi

My friend Kelli got married. We worked together at the UO and it was great to see her and some of the other usual subjects again.

Eliot was helping me pick out shoes…

I picked the red ones.

The wedding was fun. I got to see Andrea too. It was a fall theme. Kelli looked great.

I wore my cute new Banana Republic dress.

a walk in the park

Today was a special day at work. Grupo Motivos was preparing a feast for a harvest celebration. They were cooking stewed chicken and rice with pigeon peas.

I got to drive our big van to North Philadelphia. We hopped out and brought in all of the food. There were 20 or so other groups that had gathered to celebrate the fall harvest. The late lunch was mostly made with organic vegetables by the people that had grown them. It was delicious.

I got to meet a ton of people with whom NSNP has collaborated in the past in the gardens. Then we got to go on a tour of the garden areas. They grew lots of yummy veggies.

There were also some structures and paths that were very pretty.

There were other pretty plants too.

Did I mention that this was in a prison? The City Harvest program is amazing. Organizations, community gardens, individuals, and prisoners grow vegetables to curb hunger in Philadelphia. Over the last two years, they have harvested 16,000 lbs. It was pretty amazing.

It was a bit exhausting though- traffic was insane driving back and my Steve Madden sneakers were killing me. I just wanted to get home and relax. But I was locked out, so I had to drive to Center City to get keys from Nat. It took over an hour to get there in back. Now I just want to crawl into bed. But my bed is a lot more comfy than the ones that I saw today.

i’m thinking about another blog

i’m thinking about doing a separate blog just dedicated to East Coast Foods because people keep searching for East Coast foods in Philly and are then forced to read about my parking tickets and cats. Maybe when I have more time…..

eating our way across philadelphia and going to parties

Yup, I started my day by taking pictures of a pig on a spit at 8:30 am. There was a party hosted by some of the women involved with NSNP (my work) and my mom and I woke up early to help with the preparations.

Then we decided to go to the Italian Market. Please see East Coast Foods for the pictures.

After an afternoon of wondering around, we went to the party. It was a good thing that Ricardo had a machete big enough to hack at the pig.

Nat ate the foot. With glee. He asked for it.

It was a fun celebration with food, music, and dancing.

I took my mom and Nat on a tour through the NSNP African garden.

We were tired when we got home because of our long day of running around. So we ate more pie and ice cream. Then I talked to my Granddad from Seattle and he and my Grandmom are going to spend the night with us on Monday! How ironic that I leave the West Coast and all of my people are coming here! Beth and Abe are coming on Wednesday too.

kimmie came and with her came a whole lotta food (especially sweet tea and pork)

Okay, I have 60 pictures that I need to post about the last 4 days. My mom came back to Philly from NJ to share in the celebration of Nat’s birthday! We picked her up on Saturday morning at noon from the 30th Street Station. She arrived with a plum pie, Russian pastrami, chopped chicken livers, rice pudding and prosciutto. What a champ. We had quite the full day.

I haven’t switched banks yet, so I had to go to a shared branch in North Philly. The one that I found that was closest to my house was about a 25 minute drive of getting lost and whatnot. Now, I know that North Philly isn’t the best place to be driving around lost, making me quite relieved when we found the bank across the street from the Tasty Cake factory. My grandmother loves Tasty Cakes.

We drove around for a while longer and I took a picture of a wonderfully named street.

Then, we ate some Chinese food. Nat’s was good, my mom’s was so so, and I didn’t eat mine. But the hot and sour soup was delicious. I don’t know if it merits too much of a mention in the food section, so I’ll put a picture of Nat’s sweet peas and shrimp here.

We went to IKEA twice to get a bed frame, a shelf for clothes, and a spare bedroom “bed”. We also took back the queen sized box springs that we couldn’t fit up our stairs. Of course, we stopped to get some delicious Lingonberry mousse and some Lingonberry soda.

We managed to fit quite a bit of stuff in our car. (And on it.)

But I was happier to get rid of the box springs that lived in my dining room.

My mom was a good supervisor.

Snert Face was just a pest.

The next 3 hours were spent putting together IKEA furniture.

It was late before we finished.

We were proud of our accomplishments.

Tofu was quite pleased.

Finally, it was time for pie!

It was wonderful sleeping on a bed…

nat can cook!

He is the Sous Chef of Misconduct Tavern.

Yay! And on his birthday too!

Apparently they have upscale interpretations of the classics. When they taste his hummus, they will want to marry it.
