But some times the cats are way too cute.

Because that totally happened to me yesterday. I was sitting on the back of NSNP’s van, waiting to put it in the garage when I heard splatters. I looked up to see a line of bird bottoms and I looked down to see bird poo on my sweater.
I’ve been slacking on the blog front because I’ve been writing an article (for publication!) and I just submitted it. High five! Tofu was quite a help. She was snuggling with me and requesting pet-breaks.

Nat’s been working a lot so I’ve been left to my own devices. That includes discovering that I have a strange painful scar on my right foot (I’ll spare you the pictures) that looks like an inch worm. It’s almost 2 inches long and very skinny. I just noticed it yesterday and believe that it might have been a result of wearing my Steve Madden sneakers on Thursday. That’s the end of my Steve Madden collection, because the last pair I bought fell apart the first time that I wore them and now I have a nasty scar on my foot! (At least it isn’t the same one damaged by the keg of oly!)
On the plus side, yesterday I braved PennDot, the DMV here. When I got there, my number was 801 and they were on 770. It was a long wait. I amused myself by the characters and by the eye colors on the driver’s license transfer form. Blue, Green, Hazel, Grey, Brown, Pink, Diochrome, and other. It seemed interesting that there are enough Pink-eyed people in Pennsylvania to merit an additional choice besides “other”. Hmmm.
I am now an official resident of Pennsylvania and have my first DL other than Oregon! (Yes, mom, I am an organ donor).

I also registered to vote here. Which is a big deal. I have Election Day off! (November 6th) I registered with a party for the first time– but I won’t tell you which one. I feel so official.
I wonder what other good luck that being sh•t on by a bird will bring!
Today was a special day at work. Grupo Motivos was preparing a feast for a harvest celebration. They were cooking stewed chicken and rice with pigeon peas.

I got to drive our big van to North Philadelphia. We hopped out and brought in all of the food. There were 20 or so other groups that had gathered to celebrate the fall harvest. The late lunch was mostly made with organic vegetables by the people that had grown them. It was delicious.

I got to meet a ton of people with whom NSNP has collaborated in the past in the gardens. Then we got to go on a tour of the garden areas. They grew lots of yummy veggies.

There were also some structures and paths that were very pretty.

There were other pretty plants too.

Did I mention that this was in a prison? The City Harvest program is amazing. Organizations, community gardens, individuals, and prisoners grow vegetables to curb hunger in Philadelphia. Over the last two years, they have harvested 16,000 lbs. It was pretty amazing.

It was a bit exhausting though- traffic was insane driving back and my Steve Madden sneakers were killing me. I just wanted to get home and relax. But I was locked out, so I had to drive to Center City to get keys from Nat. It took over an hour to get there in back. Now I just want to crawl into bed. But my bed is a lot more comfy than the ones that I saw today.

i’m thinking about doing a separate blog just dedicated to East Coast Foods because people keep searching for East Coast foods in Philly and are then forced to read about my parking tickets and cats. Maybe when I have more time…..
I went to a training on Monday and I got to ride the Septa- Eastbound to Frankford. It smelled like the Metro in Paris (the only other subway that I’ve ridden). It brought back memories. I would share them now, but I have mosquitoes buzzing in my ear and they are distracting me. It was 90º today and muggy as hell.

I just switched my address with GEICO, my car insurance company. Ironically, I was just on the phone with my mom telling her that my car insurance was only $60 per month. After the change of address? $142.00 per month for the coverages that I had in Oregon plus the Pennsylvania Tort. Um. That’s ridiculous.
That’s about $1000 more per year.
The girl on the phone said something about how Philadelphia is more diverse than Eugene and that’s why my premium was so high. I wonder what she meant by that?
My grandparents drove back from Baltimore so that they could see me and buy me breakfast. Even if it wasn’t their intent, I was intent upon mooching some yummy food. I succeeded! See East Coast Foods for breakfast details.
When we got back, we took some pictures.

My grandmother tried to take a picture but she cut my grandfather’s head off a bit. So we tried to show her how to use the camera.

But then we gave up.

And then they drove off (in the Prius!).

Oh, and on the plus side of my adventurous blogging, I found an easy way to resize my pictures in iPhoto (instead of Photoshop) that takes 15 seconds and the pictures are bigger than what I was posting. Perfect! Be prepared for more pictures!
Our friends Abe and Beth came to visit us on Wednesday for their anniversary. All the way from Seattle. I was extremely happy to have them introduce me to my new city, ironically. They ran all around, ate, saw, and conquered. Check out East Coast Foods for our yummy adventures.
This picture looks like we are in some crazy city, but it’s really a view from my stoop.
Today, I took my mom and the Nielsens back to the airport. I was sad to see everybody go. (Although I do have a ticket to fly to Eugene on the 19th of October!) My mom brought way too many suitcases and sandwiches from Dino’s in Margate.
We ate subs for breakfast. Snert Face was trying to stow away.
But they managed to leave on time.
We went to a Vice Magazine party that our friend, Greg Bresnitz, put on.
It was sponsored by Colt 45. Canned Malt Liquor. It was my first (and last) time drinking it.
The party was in a club called Transit. It was an old building that used to be a bank with high ceilings and big disco balls. Although it was not my thing and we only stayed for an hour or so to talk to Greg, it was a neat place.
However, I did get my first Philly parking ticket. At 11:25 pm. Because the two hour parking was until midnight. $26. Irritating.
